Itinerary

Day 1: Depart USA

We depart Columbus this afternoon for an overnight flight to beautiful southern Spain.  We will enjoy various meals and service while in flight.

Day 2: Arrive in Madrid

We arrive in Madrid, the capital of Spain, and are greeted by our tour guide.  We’ll enjoy an orientation tour of Madrid as we travel to our hotel. After checking into our hotel, the afternoon is free to explore on your own.  We enjoy a nice welcome dinner this evening.

Day 3: Madrid

After breakfast we enjoy a morning tour of Madrid.  Our local guide will take us to the highlight of our morning. We will visit the Prado Museum with its priceless art treasures and a walking tour of Plaza Espana.  This afternoon is free to explore on your own.

Day 4: Madrid / Toledo

After breakfast we travel to splendid Toledo, spectacularly situated on a granite hill surrounded by a loop of the Tagus River.  Our local guide will show us the Moorish bridge, the early synagogue, the 13th century gothic cathedral and the Church of Santo Tome which houses one of El Greco’s most famous paintings.  This afternoon we’ll return to Madrid and enjoy some free time to explore Madrid on your own.

Day 5: Granada

This morning we board our high speed train in Madrid and travel to Granada. No place can serve as greater testament to the glories of Andalusia than the hills of Granada—especially that legendary hill known as the Alhambra. Granada was, for centuries, the last stronghold of the Moors before their final defeat in 1492 to the Catholic monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella. The fort, palace and gardens of Alhambra, whose beauty were legendary even in their own days, were the heart and soul of the Moors. The beauty of the Alhambra palace and the Generalife gardens, is not only that the Moors were brilliant architects of bricks and mortar, of precious marble and delicately carved wood, but also of trees and flowers, of cascading fountains and tranquil pools. Enjoy a guided walking tour featuring a visit to its main attraction, the Alhamabra Complex and the exotic Water Gardens of the Generalife, the royal summer residence.  Late this afternoon we transfer to Malaga which will be our home for the next 3 evenings.

Day 6: Cordoba

We visit Cordoba today offering an impressive and surprisingly rich history. Not many know that during the 11th century, Cordoba was one of the most important capitals in Europe. People of various cultures and religions – Jews, Muslims and Christians – were living peacefully together, and important philosophers, scientists, and artists emerged from here.  Knowing some of Cordoba’s rich cultural background will certainly enhance your tour as we visit some of its great monuments. The highlight of Cordoba is the Mezquita which is the third largest Arabian Mosque in the world and described by some as the most beautiful and original building in all of Spain.

Day 7: Malaga, Costa del Sol

We enjoy a morning tour of Malaga visiting the famous Cathedral and market and spend the rest of the day enjoying some down time along the Costa del Sol.  Do some shopping in Malaga, relax at the beach or take part in an optional excursion.

Day 8: Seville

This morning we depart Malaga and travel to Seville.  For all its important monuments and fascinating history, Seville is universally famous for being a joyous town. While the Sevillians are known for their wit and sparkle, the city itself is striking for its vitality. It is the largest town in Southern Spain and the home of Carmen, Don Juan and Figaro. In Seville our tour guide will walk us through the old city as we enjoy a guided entrance to the Cathedral and the Giralda tower. We will also not want to miss the Santa Cruz quarter for time to explore the cramped streets, flowered balconies, and richly decorated facades which all reflect the true character of this city.  This afternoon will conclude with a visit to the beautiful Maria Luisa Park

Day 9: Sagres Peninsula and Cape St. Vincent

This morning, enjoy a scenic drive to the Sagres Peninsula of Portugal. Admire spectacular views across Baleeira Beach before continuing your journey along the coast to Cape St. Vincent for beautiful sea views from the south-western most point of Portugal. Visit the resort of Lagos, where Henry the Navigator lived.  We enjoy our dinner and overnight in Vilamoura.

Day 10: Lisbon

See Lisbon's landmarks, including the Monument to the Discoveries, the suspension bridge spanning the River Tagus, the Belém Tower and the quaint Alfama district. Visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Hieronymite Monastery during your sightseeing tour with a Local Specialist. Later, in your free time, perhaps join an optional experience to the historic towns of Cascais and Sintra.

Day 11: Return to USA

We say goodbye to beautiful Lisbon, Portugal and take an early morning transfer to the Lisbon airport for our return flights to the USA.
